The Nation: A Documentary About Red Sox Fans

In 2004 the Boston Red Sox did what no team in the history of baseball had ever done by making the greatest comeback in sports history. Their whirlwind season came to its victorious close with the team ending 86 years of trial and tribulation, hope and heartache, near-wins and eventual disappointment.

But through all these trying years one thing remained constant - the nation of loyal fans who never gave up on their team. For the first time, the voices of these fans are heard as the history of the Red Sox is explored through their eyes, culminating in the thrill of the 2004 ALCS and World Series.

These stories reveal the true nature of what it means to be a Red Sox fan - how the love for the team has been passed down through the generations and has created an indelible bond among all members of The Nation in New England and beyond. To be a fan of the Red Sox is to be a fan like no other. In short, it truly is a way of life.

    Red Sox Connection Review

Red Sox fans share a common bond with one another and The Nation pays homage to the everyday rank and file members of Red Sox Nation.

Independent filmmaker and Essex, MA native Lenny Manzo interviewed over 50 loyal fans from all walks of life – a lawyer, MBTA operator, insurance adjuster, social worker, night club manager, Catholic school teacher, etc. – and molded the footage into a story that tells the recent history of the Red Sox, starting with the Impossible Dream team of 1967 and climaxing with the 2004 World Champions.

The DVD touches on the hope of a Nation through trying times, such as 1978, 1986 and 2003, while exploring why the Red Sox are such an integral part of our lives. The bulk of the documentary is dedicated to the faith-rewarded postseason heroics of the ’04 team.

Filmed in various locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York, The Nation has no archived footage of ballgames from seasons past. Instead, the descriptive words of the fans bring back the memories and especially the emotions that are attached to numerous events on the Red Sox timeline.

If you’ve ever lost sleep, been depressed, couldn’t go to work, or wanted to destroy a TV because of a Red Sox loss, then this is the movie for you. Red Sox fans can laugh, cry, sigh and, most importantly, relate to what is being said throughout nearly 80 minutes of interviews.

This documentary truly is a reflection of the loyalty and passion of Red Sox fans. As one interviewee put it, “being around that many people that you know care about the same thing that you care about….nothing beats it.” That common bond is what Red Sox Nation is all about and this documentary captures its essence.
